Well you could just have your own notification there.  Its settings
should be in its own subtree anyway.

Thats a pity, I thought thats what you were trying to do, or did you
totally abandon that idea?

The UI may be a necessary evil, but there should be no need to
intertwine the 'plugin' deeply into base objects.  Since the long-term
goal IS to make it a real plugin.
