So, let me see if I understand. Your concern is that switching focus
away from the folder list after a folder has been selected (current
behavior) can be frustrating to users because:

a. it requires them to press the <tab> key several times to get back to
the folder list, and

b. it makes them feel like they are not in control of Evolution (since
focus changed without their explicit request)

Are those your main concerns? Am I missing anything?

In this case, what do you see as being the advantage of switching the
focus to the right pane (after a folder is selected with the mouse)? If
your proposed changes are made, then focus will be in different places
post-selecting a folder, depending on how you selected the folder. Is
this (apparent inconsistency in behaviors) useful?
