I am not sure how we would do this though. We need a palette of at
least 5 distinct colors or so...

Yeah, this is easy to do.

Wouldn't it cause too much clutter in the UI though? We already use the
icons for categories.
(Of course, it's also true that categories and multiple calendars are
going to kind of overlap in the new design...)

What about my idea of appending the string in the title displayed on the
calendar view? If it doesn't fit in the space, the tooltip would still
show the whole thing, including the calendar name.
