I would like Evince to be capable of downloading PDF from URL and open it:
1. when I type in evince and URL in command line. Example:
$ evince
https://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/tests/xhtml/testfiles/resources/pdf/dummy.pdf
2. GUI method:
Open -> (Open Document windows) Other Locations -> Enter
"https://hwpi.harvard.edu/files/torman/files/sample.pdf" in "Connect to
Server" field -> Click open
Rationale:
I often surf the Web and find unknown (for me), potentially interesting
PDF documents. Built-in browser PDF viewer can't render substantial
number of PDF documents correctly, so I must open them in stand-alone
PDF viewer such as Evince. Desktop web browsers have a feature to
download PDF file to temporary directory then execute external program
to display them. However many things may interfere with/prevent that
such as sandboxing tools (firejail), security features of package
deployment managers (Snap) or MAC (Mandatory access control) policies.
User may also prefer to open suspicious PDF document in another VM or
different sandbox than a browser is contained in. Easy way to open
document from copy-pasted URL will be an improvement over using browser
or wget to download file just to see if it is interesting.
