[evince] No debugable output even after compiling with --enable-debug

Even after compiling evince with --enable-debug
I don't get any output at console when launching evince like this:
$ EV_DEBUG_JOBS=1 evince foo.pdf

I followed these instructions:

with, as it seems, no progress at all.

Am I missing something?
