Writing a backend

I am looking for documentation on how to write a backend for a
rasterised document in 240dpi, 300dpi, 600dpi or 1200dpi.
I am writing a FOSS library to read a specific file format and I would
test this with a simple viewer application first. Jeff Waugh suggested
using evince and it makes sense to me.
