I just created an OO.o Impress file with a document link to the same
file, I exported it as a PDF, and I opened it in evince 2.22.1, acroread
8.1.3, and xpdf. Both evince and acroread opened the file in the proper
application! Only xpdf opened it in gedit.

So even evince 2.22.1 can do what I need, as long as I create the
document in Impress. I've posted a query in comp.text.tex about
href{run: to see if anyone can help figure out why beamer and Impress
create vastly different PDFs, and I've given snippets of the PDF
contents for both files in that posting. If anyone here wants to see
them, look there, or ask here.
