I didn't even know there were different versions of Ghostscript. Is
there a reason for Ubuntu to keep esp as the default one if its
rendering is not so good?
Just a guess: for cups (or foomatic), because gs-esp supports
more printer drivers (you can show the list with "gs --help").
At the same time, at least in Debian, there are packages for both
"gs-esp" and "gs-gpl".
