If you could find some way to reproduce the issue, that would be super

Actually, I'm trying it out in gdb now, and have had pretty good luck
reproducing it by opening a second tab, closing the tab, hitting the
new tab button. That seems to work reliably in under 10 attempts. I'll
add that detail to the upstream bug report.
