there seems to be some things still seriously broken (my biggest
pain is missing Greasemonkey as I use it for my work everyday;

be fixed, or is XULRunner-based Epy basically abandonware? Note
that it will be probably impossible for us to ship both versions
of firefox just because of Epiphany.

Ubuntu 8.04 will also be shipping ephy 2.22, and that's an LTS release, so at least you're not alone - support for the will theoretically be provided within Ubuntu for three years (although that's security fixes and major bugs, not pet annoyances). Curious to see where things go myself...
