Yes, you could do this as an extension. Maybe it'd be tricky to grab the
text from Mozilla (Christian would know how to do it) but besides that
there'd be no real problem.

What's the GTK spellchecker? If I were to code the extension, I'd use
Enchant for the actual spellchecking....
