I think your gnome-common is too old:

        * macros2/gnome-common.m4 (GNOME_DEBUG_CHECK) : now that
autoconf-2.52
          is a prereq for things the build broke on the use of
              AC_DEFINE(GNOME_ENABLE_DEBUG)
          without the additional arguments.
