I can possibly work out how to migrate the subscriptions, though it may
be more polite to do a bulk invite rather than subscribe... thoughts?

The SSO module that comes with Discourse actually replaces the
functionality to use Discourse's login system, and thus the ability to
sign up with any other method. Fortunately, a plugin can be written to
support GNOME's SSO, and by the looks of things it's fairly trivial[0].
