We can also point to various alternative desktops built on GNOME
technology - whether that's the continuing ability to run the GNOME 2
panel and window manager, or to XFCE and LXDE.
Scratch that, we either point people to GNOME Shell or GNOME Panel +
Metacity. Our message is totally broken if we point people to other
products :-).
Pointing people to GNOME 2 for a non-accelerated desktop is fine
as a stopgap, but it's only a short-term solution. It will bitrot
if nobody steps up to develop and maintain it.
If there's a long-term (> about 3 years) demand for this, people
may just have to look to other free software projects. Instead of
fighting that, maybe we should try to make friendly with a project
like XFCE. GNOME is bigger than the desktop. There's no reason we
can't give another project our blessings.
