GNOME gets South African government office up and running fast with Linux solutions
Needing a low-cost, dependable, and accessible solution for its outdated social grant application process, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) turned to Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) with its easy-to-use GNOME user interface for help.  GNOME, a standard part of SLED and all leading Linux and Unix distributions, provides a user-friendly interface that allowed SASSA employees to begin processing grant applications 15 minutes after the first system was set up in Limpopo, according to Solly Mokgohloa, senior SASSA ICT regional manager.

Thirty-nine sites have deployed the Linux solution since 2007, which includes Omni virtualization software, Userful Multiplier, for increased efficiency.  “Using this Linux desktop virtualization software, a single desktop computer can power up to 10 full-featured stations that require minimal electricity,” said Thomas Heubner, Omni Authorized Distributor in South Africa.  SASSA officials are now able to capture and process social grant applications within 24 hours from rural areas.
GNOME’s easy-to-use desktop environment, combined with the speed of SLED and Userful Multiplier, provided the optimum elements for the cost-effective, reliable, and painless solution SASSA required.  SASSA employees were immediately comfortable and productive using GNOME’s intuitive user interface that allowed them to focus on processing grant applications.

GNOME’s overriding mission is to create a complete, free, and easy-to-use desktop environment, regardless of language, physical ability, or technical expertise.  In addition to the free, accessible desktop millions of people around the world now employ, the GNOME project provides a powerful application development framework to create free and open source software applications.  GNOME is a standard part of all leading GNU/Linux and Unix distributions as well as many mobile platforms like cellular phones and tablets.
