This is basically a simple acoustic issue with the iMac since the microphone and speaker are pretty close together in the same case = echo between them. I got around it by using a separate microphone OR earphones - you only need one of the two. This is enough to stop the echo. You could even do it wirelessly if your model supports Bluetooth headsets.

iMac has inbuilt microphone and speaker.
