I see this in configure.ac, so yes, they are still needed, otherwise
GNOME support is disabled :
PKG_CHECK_MODULES([GNOME], [libgnome-2.0 >= 2.14.0 libgnomeui-2.0 >=
2.14.0], [found_gnome=yes])
