Perhaps a better way would be to:
1. Enable "Browse Subdirectories" in the Tree pane.
2. Select all the files you want to update in the File Name pane.
3. Clear the Artist (or Album Artist) field in the Tag pane.
4. Click the small blank button to the right of the Artist field.
The tooltip for it is: "Tag selected files with this Artist".
5. Save files
