Just some wild guesses...
There was a problem with some versions of id3lib when scanning a
directory with lots of MP3's.  That was with id3lib 3.7.x but maybe this
is a similar problem.  Have you tried with just 1 MP3 in a directory?
Maybe there's a problem with the scanning of sub-directories.  Try
turning that of.
If possible you could try recompiling with another version of id3lib.

As for the core files, their size is probably limited to 0 bytes.  Check
with "ulimit -a" and change their size with "ulimit -c unlimited".
