Ok, I tried this now and it seems to help.

But - if you pass the rtsp stream to totem and press pause there, you
get the exact same behaviour of gnome-dvb-daemon

I removed the line and re-compiled rygel but did not see any improvement. I also tried increasing the max number of buffers and re-compiling. This appeared to make the picture play for a fraction of a second longer before again pausing.

I have now updated to the 0.1.23 of gnome-dvb-daemon and various gstreamer components and now it wont't play at all with the PS3 saying the data is corrupted :-(

I'm now going to start again with a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10.
