I'll take a peek at the python extensions. There is a group_props script that almost does what I'm looking for but it does not recognize line objects. I'll keep trying. Maybe I can cobble something together. I do segregate the various categories of the related item, such as I may have a notes on a layer overlaying components into which I might put purchasing information - part numbers, vendor, failure notes, installation notes, etc.
