Hello Christine,
Dia runs on different operating systems. Which one do you use? Most
probably Windows.
Did you install Dia from http://dia-installer.de ?
Which Dia version do you use? (What is the name of file you've downloaded?)

When we go to save, it wants to save as a picture.
Selecting File->Save or File->Save As will allow you to save in the
*.dia Dia diagram format.
Note that File->Export is different.
Dia on Windows uses the "Pictures" folder as the default location, but
this has nothing to do with the format - are you
talking about the "Pictures" folder?
Later clicking on it won't open it with any program.
I assume that you are double-clicking on the Diagram file in Windows
Explorer. If Dia is correctly installed, it will open the file in that
case. Note that you can also drag and drop files from the Explorer to
your Dia toolbox to open them.
We cannot open each other's documents when we e-mail them to each other.
Which email software do you use? Do you save the file from the email
before you try to open it? I guess that this is related to your previous
problem.
We also tried copying to a Word document, which works but the text is missing.
If you export your Diagram as a *.wmf file and insert that file into
Word, you should achieve much better results.
If there are still problems: Which version of Word do you use?
Also, when printing it comes out huge and on several pages even when reducing the size on the page and/or
printer. Any suggestions?
Please have a look at File->Page Setup. I guess that you want to print
your diagram on one page.
Select the correct paper size and "Fit to: 1 by 1". If this doesn't
help: Could you explain your problem in a little bit more detail?
Regards,
Steffen
