Can't type into shapes

Dear All,

I'm sure this is the most basic question ever asked, but here is what happened to me:

I installed dia .97 from the Ubuntu 10.04 repositories, started it an made a few boxes ... right after a box was drawn, I could type into the box. But at the forth box, I could not type into it anymore; I can draw connectors and draw boxes to my heart's delight, but I can't type into boxes (and all other shapes that have text in them).

I de- and re-installed, no change; now I can't type into shapes at all.

This is driving me nuts, I'm desperate, please help!
