1) When do we make the next release? And what will it take?
Fixing enough bugs to make it worthwhile is the minimum requirement.
My goal is to have only about 50 bugs open when doing rc1. Especially no critical bugs must be open. (The one I'm working on is the font size mess, e.g. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=538499
But also 108293, 120337, 162034, 345538, 438020

Besides testing, is there any particular test we non-developers can do
to help?

(I'm assusimg you meant task not test.)

 * checking out the new features from SVN and updating the manual [1]

 * triaging bugs [2] could help to get the bug count down.

 * providing pleasant examples - especially for shape sets which currently
have no example at all - would help, too.

Thanks for asking,
        Hans
