I ran the new code on the vdxtosvg examples in the samples dir, and
ended up with a crash after:

** ERROR **: file vdx-import.c: line 508 (get_master_shape): assertion
failed: (master < theDoc->Masters->len)

So I'm afraid I cannot commit it yet.
