It indeed has the basic callback structure I was looking for? So, the
natural question for me is: Is there any common roadmap between Dia
and DiaCanvas?  (Or has there ever be a common history?)

I'm not sure it has that callback structure, I haven't looked at it
myself.  

Well, the demo that comes with it prints out the actions I do on the
canvas, so this proves to me that there is at least some form of
callback handling.

It's a split-off from Dia for some who wanted the connections and
such but not all the other Dia stuff.

Ok, I see. Usually both kinds of needs can be serviced by a
well-designed architecture, that splits off decoupled functionalities
in separate libraries :-)
