libraries installed on alternate prefix

I compiled and installed some libs in my homedir (/home/pfaes/usr/local/...).
I suspect my new dia binary still links with my OLD libraries. Result is: dia
doesn't read any PNG files, and no text is displayed in a diagram.
How can I get dia to link with my up-to-date libraries?

thanks!

It might be cheaper for you to go in a magazine store, and buy one with a
recent sources CDs; in my $LOCALE, complete Debian distributions including

sources into an alternate prefix in order to not mess up your current
installation.
