It depends on what tools to use to view the commit list. With a merge
commit, the release commit and tag are also part of the master branch,
it is just not a straight line.
Compared to implementing an equivalent of 'svn lock' for git, a merge
commit is a far more easier solution. The fact that 'git lock' doesn't
exist is maybe because the branch system is powerful enough.
