Log-out behaviour of applications

I've noticed that gedit in GNOME 3.6 prevents the log out (shut down
etc.) if it has unsaved data. While it is useful behaviour:

 - It is not done by any other Gnome application I know
 - The dialog shown by gedit is unhelpful as to choose an option one
needs to cancel the logout, click any option (they don't seem to do
anything after cancellation) and then close gedit (choosing to save or
to discard changed etc.)

I've checked the Gnome HID and it does not mention anything about log
out (it looked a bit out of data as even unstable version mentioned
gconf). Is there any standard regarding it and if not should we have one
(disclaimer: I'm not a designer)? I guess there are several options:

 - Log out should terminate all application regardless of state. The
application themselves should autosave changes (this may be problematic
for destructive changes such as photo editing).
 - Log out should terminate all application regardless of state. The
application themselves should autosave changes but not to original file
(allowing to undo changes later)
 - Incorporate buttons into logout dialog. ("Do you want to cancel
download of GNOME-x.y.z.iso?")
 - Consider it non-issue
 - Something else?

Best regards
