I would really like to have a mailing list to complement IRC for
real-time discussions and the wiki for more stable information.

For announcements like the one that started this thread, it seems
reasonable to be able to send an email that can be read asynchronously
by all the people interested.

Certainly more reasonable than posting the same information on IRC a
few times to make sure that people have seen it.
