I can't seem to find specific documentation on the Gnome 3 user
experience ideas. Is there a unifying document I can refer to?

Like Xavier said, the initial plan is for it to work well for Empathy.
That will make that foundation reasonably solid before expanding it
desktop-wide. The plan is to add e-d-s as the first writable back-end,
though I don't have an specific plans to make a stand-alone
address-book application. It would certainly be possible (and should
be relatively easy, after we have a writable back-end).

I haven't discussed this with the evolution team, as we haven't gotten
to the point of adding a writable back-end. But e-d-s was certainly
the first one we had in mind (to integrate well with the rest of the
desktop).
