Well, you are talking about a future reality in GNOME 3, while Luis
was talking about the precedent and current situation in GNOME 2; in
GNOME 2 applets have had a prominent place, and have been dedicated to
many things.

Many time the "notification area usage" came up and it was pointed out
our fantastic HIG didn't talk about them.  It may be too late to be
fixed now to talk about GNOME 2, but I encourage those with a
particular interest in GNOME 3 interface changes not to forget the
HIG, it certainly needs help; and will give us something way more
coherent than a collection of pointers to Windows or Mac OS X own
guidelines.
