how to identify if my laptop is docked without dmidecode

Is there a way to identify if a laptop is docked without using
dmidecode, and with only hal or equivalent application which does not
need root access ?
Reason :
To run a script at gnome login , which identifies if laptop is at home
or office , and set few settings and run few applications accordingly.

PS : why not add a feature request to support home/office/... profile ?
