Any suggestions for what to use as key -> value database in gnome-keyring?

With the new certificate store support coming to GNOME Keyring
internally we have the need to store indexes of fields or a small map of
trust values.

Are there any DB or hash/btree libraries 'blessed' by the GNOME
platform? Obviously it's simple enough to design one's own format, but
I'm sure this has been done numerous times.

A requirement would be that the file format remained stable.

Perhaps sqlite3, although involving SQL in such a simple matter seems
overdone.
