Is it possible that it's not the CPU usage that is slowing you down, but rather the hard disk activity?  Copying files is pretty much the most disk-intensive thing you can do,.especially if you are reading from and writing to the same hard disk.  There's a clue in what you wrote about compiling a program.  The fact that you're still able to work doing that, when it's the CPU rather than the disk that is loaded, suggests that the copying issue is disk rather than CPU.

Note that most of what you do on your desktop (reading email, browsing the Web, etc.) uses disk, not to mention swapping if you don't have enoughRAM for everything you're running, so lots of stuff is going to slow down when your disk is heavily loaded.

There is probably little to be done about this other than getting faster hard drives, or perhaps setting up software RAID with striping across multiple drives to spread out the disk load.

i was trying some stuff with wine and needed to copy some stuff from a
NTFS-3g mounted partition to a EXT3 partitions.
the copying wasn`t much of a problem, but doing anything else on the pc
while the copying was in progress was just a hell.
just the copy dragged 100% cpu usage.. i`m having a AMD Athlon x64 3200+
Venice core and i`m running Fedora Core 7 Test 4.

Now the question is if it would be possible to "fix" the gnome copy stuff so
that it doesn`t need to take all my CPU usage
and so that i can just continue doing other things while the copying
progress is bussy.

when i`m compiling a program i have also nearly 100% cpu usage but i`m not
having any problem browsing the wek or typing stuff...
and that`s with a cpu intensive compile. copying files should be only hard
drive stuff and just a little CPU usage..
