I think the problem most people are encountering are with scaled images,
see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4320 . The only way I
found for Mandriva 2006 to ship with decent performance was to always
force cairo to use XCopyArea instead of XRenderComposite
