Auto start programs

Gnome has begun auto-starting more and more programs. Every morning when
I fire up the laptop, 3, then 5, now 8 various applications are
auto-started when the desktop loads.

I am very careful to have everything closed before I logout. I do not
know if it is still the case, but am aware that in the past, Gnome would
auto start what was running when you logoff.

Is this a bug, a feature, or bad karma on my part?

I am using Gnome 2.6 under Debian 2.6.16.16
