People usually use a package manager and upgrade their packages. A step
in this process is to remove the old files.

The BSD's have yet to upgrade to 2.6, so I'd opt for keeping the applet
in gnome-applets and add a configure switch to enable or disable.
It's my understanding that the FreeBSD people are getting very close to
a working HAL, and when that happens the NetBSD people will probably
follow closely, so it could be removed entirely in a release or two.
