This is a very sticky issue. For instance, we've historically had
problems with uri handlers for ftp:// and similar uri types. When
browsing an ftp site with nautilus gftp (or whatever) would launch when
clicking on a folder. Or in the case when nautilus itself was set to
handle ftp: it made browsing very slow, because it kept re-executing
nautilus every time you clicked on a folder.

It was partly for this reason the dav:// uri method was added instead of
using http://, since http: is generally handled by a web browser.
