Heh, I always assumed that the code would end up in the panel,
actually :-). Doing it as an applet just let me play around/break
things, as well as actually have something for people to bang on in the
meantime. I'm working on a patch right now, and have opened
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=319696 about the issue.
