Hi Vidar,

  gnome apps interact a lot with user configuration data in $HOME.
To find out what causes these two apps to not start out you can do:
start up /usr/X11/bin/xterm and then in the terminal do
strace -o /tmp/gnome-terminal.tr gnome-terminal

that should give you a clue as to which write failure and stop it from 
starting up.
