Yes, I remember it. It was a nice feature to be able to set volume for
particular sounds.
I have two sound cards and my experiences say, that optimal solution
should have even more:
- It should be able to set not only volume, but also soundcard. For
example, I want to play DVD using speakers connected to soundcard #1,
but play GNOME event sounds using small speakers at the table (soundcard
#0).
- Customize hardware mixer. Something like: CD player /dev/hdc is
connected to Soundcard #1 CD and by default wants to mute all other
channels, TV tuner is connected to Soundcard #0 CD and by default wants
to mute, GNOME sounds are going to PCM of Soundcard #1 and by default
don't want to mute other channels, VoIP headset mic is connected to
Soundcard #0 Mic and wants to set recording source etc.).
- And finally, thin clients with soundcard need mixer (sound, CD
playing) controllable over network. It can be realized in more levels
(ALSA-over-IP, GStreamer network output, ESD). Currently only ESD can do
it.
