That helps with one particular icon implementation (EggStatusIcon), 
which doesn't help with the EggTrayIcon widget a lot of code is using.  
Also, it only gives you 1-bit transparency.

To get the same sort of transparency handling as for applets, the system 
tray spec (or XEMBED, maybe?) would need to be altered to support 
passing of a background pixmap.
