You might want to change power management/performance of your desktop
machine to save power or work more quietly, too, as well as notebook. I
think Windows allows to setup and change profiles for any computer (Control
Panel->Power Management IIRC).

If your computer does not have a battery, it makes no sense to run battery
monitor.
