This seems to me like it should go in autoconf.  autoconf already
detects whether GCC is in use and if so adds -O2 -g to CFLAGS, no reason
it couldn't detect GNU binutils and do the same thing for LDFLAGS.  That
way everyone gets the improvement without modifying their package and
without passing a configure option.
