gedit ssh://username myhost com/folder/file.txt
works for me :)
But It's true that some GNOME applications (included on the Desktop
release) don't handle remote files correctly (ie: they are not using
gnome-vfs).
So a good goal for GNOME 2.10 would be to make every application on
the Desktop support correctly (at least for reading) of remote files.
This could be a good task for GNOME love:
* Test every app in the Desktop to open a remote file using
diffrent protocols (basically with/without authentication is
the difference).
* Make a list of appcliations+cases that should be fixed (bug
in bugzilla and a meta-bug)
* Fix it!
Sample:
* EOG:
Testing:
* opens gnome-vfs files without auth: YES
* opens gnome-vfs files that need auth: NO
Checking in bugzilla:
* "Ohh there is already a bug!"
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=141851
Fixing:
* Apply the gnome_authentication_manager_init () patch
IIRC fille-roller would need lot of fopen/fread --> gnome_vfs_open/gnome_vfs_read,
maybe same for ggv/gpdf... etc...
Any volunteers?
