You could do the @VERSION@ substition in configure (like it's done for
.spec.in), which would alleviate the need to change po/Makefile* and
other Makefile's, but unfortunately it doesn't help wrt renaming the
file, which requires either removing and readding it to cvs, losing cvs
history (except for the Attic), or cvs surgery.
