It's very true. A desktop with icons does provide a starting point for
users. Microsoft's rationale for this is probably that they actually
have a button labeled "start". But it was still nice to have three or
four icons on the desktop as before.
It also tells people that their desktop is a place where they can put
things. If there's nothing there to begin with, it's not made clear up
front.
Why would anyone want to remove things from the desktop?
