1280x1024 on a 17" monitor.  I'd love to have a bigger monitor and a
higher resolution, not so that I can maximize windows even bigger, but
so that I can fit more windows on the screen.

I recognize that there are times when maximizing is useful, particularly
on smaller screens.  I don't oppose people maximizing their windows, or
designs accomodating it.  What I oppose are design decisions that are
based on the idea that maximizing windows is the only way to go.

Do keep in mind that the Mac has never had a maximize button. Mac users
a decade ago got along just fine without maximizing, and their screens
were pretty tiny by today's standards.  That's how the Mac was designed
to be used.  Look how compact Finder windows are on classic Mac.

Add a Places menu or something similar on the menu bar?  Sure, go ahead.
Make the desktop empty by default?  That's just pointless.
