if those apps don't integrate with the desktop, then that's *their*
problem, not GNOME's.

for what it's worth, the GNOME-ified OOo (Ximian and Fedora use it,
iirc) integrate with gnomeprint.

it should already abstract this.  at least, I've never had to deal with
it being one or the other.

gnome-vfs *does* implement it, but it's not called 'fish'.  (Where the
hell did KDE get that name, anyhow?)  it's ssh or sftp in gnome-vfs.
